A Message from the G-CAN Directorship, Spring 2022

Dear members,

The past four months have been busy ones for the G-CAN leadership as we look forward not only to a return to in-person meetings, but to new initiatives and projects. Along with setting a date and location for our hybrid face-to-face and virtual 2022 annual meeting, we have many exciting updates to share with you! Please read on to learn more, and watch your email for more announcements in the coming months.

8th Annual Research Symposium

With travel restrictions lifting and more venues opening to live events, we have decided to hold this year’s symposium both virtually and in person on a “hybrid” platform, Friday, October 21, and Saturday October 22, 2022.

For members who are able to travel, face-to-face sessions will be held at the Hilton Alexandria Old Town, minutes from Reagan International Airport and Washington D.C. Those who are not traveling have the option of attending virtually, as in the past two years. Pre-recorded webcasts will be combined with live presentations, and all streamed seamlessly via a conference website.

For all those attending in person, we will be offering participants several opportunities for networking and social events before and after the general sessions. A tentative agenda can be found on the G-CAN Website.

With more than 35 speakers and the ability to attend in person or virtually, this promises to be one of our richest meetings in terms of content and participation. Watch your email in the coming months for more details including Early Career Investigator abstract submission deadlines, accommodations, and registration information.

G-CAN Awards

One of the highlights of the annual meeting is the presentation of awards honoring members and early career researchers who have made outstanding contributions to the field. Along with the annual presentations of the Gold Medal Investigator Award, G-Can Presidential Emerging Career Investigator Award, and Ralph H. Schumacher Memorial Early Career Investigator Award, we have added one new category: Lifetime Achievement Awards. This award in 2022 is presented to two women and two men who have made significant contributions during the course of their career to the understanding of work in the field of gout, hyperuricemia and crystal arthropathy. Additionally, we have decided to select two awardees for this year’s G-Can Presidential Emerging Career Investigator Award, one man and one woman.

You will find the list of this year’s winners with their photos and bios here. Each of these awardees will be presenting a lecture at the annual meeting and receiving an award plaque. Congratulations to all for your quality work and dedication!

Alliance for Gout Awareness

The Alliance for Gout Awareness is a national nonprofit that works to reduce the stigma of gout, and to empower gout patients through education and public awareness. G-CAN executive director Rebecca Snyders Hill recently met with the Alliance’s leadership to discuss ways the two organizations might benefit each other through the sharing of information. You will notice we have added their logo to the bottom of the G-CAN website, which links to the Alliance for Gout Awareness website. The Alliance site has many resources including fact sheets, videos and pod casts for both patients and providers. Likewise, they have added G-CAN to their list of related organizations. For more information on the Alliance for Gout Awareness, you may visit their website or contact Rebecca Snyders

Sincerely,

Robert Terkeltaub, MD, President
